“On Green Dolphin Street” and time travel

jim, January 5, 2026January 5, 2026

One of my favorite tunes that we played in high school jazz band was “On Green Dolphin Street” which we played as a bossa nova. This tune had a moderately difficult trumpet part, but the version we played was more of a saxophone feature. For many years I thought that the song was originally written as a bossa nova piece, but when I went searching to listen to it, I stumbled upon the Miles Davis version. The 1958 version of “On Green Dolphin Street” by the Miles Davis sextet (with John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley) is absolutely brilliant! Every time I listen to this piece, I feel like I am transported back in time. It’s like I am there in the Plaza Hotel in NYC in 1958.
