New keyboard

jim, November 21, 2025November 26, 2025

After much deliberation I decided to purchase a new keyboard. I looked at a lot of different brands and models. I knew I didn’t want a mini keyboard, and I was pretty sure that I wanted a num pad since I have always had one. Also, mechanical switches were a must. I narrowed the decision down to three choices.

I looked at NuPhy and their Air96 models looked interesting. As is usually the case when I am deciding whether to purchase something that costs more than $100, I read a lot of reviews and looked on Reddit for comments about the keyboards. I liked the fact that you could customize the switches and keys on the NuPhy keyboards, and they offered a variety of different types of both.

I also looked at a couple of different Keychron models as well. These were comparable in price and features to NuPhy’s keyboards. A lot of different features, some of which I had never even heard of before. As with the NuPhy boards, I read many reviews and scoured Reddit for comments about the Keychron boards.

Lastly, I looked at newer model of the keyboard I have been using for years: the Razer Blackwidow. I have been happy over all with the Razer keyboard I had, but part of the reason for upgrading is that Razer’s software no longer supports the old keyboard, so some of the functionality had been nerfed.

After a lot of mental back and forth, a Best Buy gift card arrived in email, and the Razer keyboard went on sale at the same time, so those two things more or less made the decision for me. I am now trying to get used to the new keyboard as I type this. Wish me luck as I stumble through this for a couple of days.
